Lab Updates

I am excited to share an article we recently published in the Journal of Latin American Geography with colleagues and lab members, Felipe Guerra and José Miguel Valdés Negroni, titled: “Negociando consentimiento y derechos indígenas: Geografías legales de fragmentación en territorio Mapuche-Williche, Futawillimapu Chile. In it we discuss how Indigenous rights implementation marks legal advances but also opens possibilities for new forms of cooptation that harms Indigenous customs and territorial cohesion. Specifically, we explain how Free, Prior and Informed Consent is being interpreted by private actors to fragment social relations in Mapuche territory. We focus on how court case wins are leading to consent being sold in drawn out consultation processes, leading to prolonged conflicts.

Lab Updates

This week I’ve pulled together the final details for Section Two of the Diploma in Socio-cultural Analysis and Intervention of Disasters offered by the Center for the Integrated Managment of Disaster Risks (CIGIDEN) that I am affiliated with in Chile. The section I coordinate is on “Vulnerability and Intersectionality: Elaboration of Social Diagnostics.” Each teacher will operate a conceptual portion of the class and a laboratory-based section to examine disaster case studies throughout Chile and Latin America.

Lab Updates

Kelly Lab commits to writing anthropological report for the Wadalafken territory on their ancestral and cultural uses of territory that they will use for administrative and legal purposes. The maps and report are currently being developed. Overall, we will work with collaborators to create maps that reflect Mapuche Lakfenche geography, identifying areas that need to be protected by identifying spatial patterns in collecting fruits, plant medicine, seafoods and other spiritual-cultural uses of territory.

Lab Updates - July 12, 2021

This week with Dr. Maron Greenleaf, we launched the Energy Justice Clinic at Dartmouth College. Our clinic is supported by the Irving Institute for Energy and Society at Dartmouth College and donors. The clinic will have two case studies — one in the Upper Valley in New Hampshire and the other in Chile. Our experiential learning we will offer to students is designed to serve community-based needs.
